The folks at Construx have published a nice explanation of the cone of uncertainty – an adaptation of an idea from Steven McConnell's Software Estimation: Demystifying The Black Art (2006). I've dissonant feelings toward it. In “Software Estimation: Demystifying the Black Art”, Steve McConnell brings forth all sorts of industry data that shows that the problem with software development estimation is underestimating, not overestimating.
